Persepolis
Persepolis is a graphic novel that I feel all college aged american students should read because it really shines a light on a culture that myself and most americans know very little about. Personally I had a some prior knowledge of middle eastern culture because one of my best friends is from Pakistan and another from Jordan, but what this book really taught me about was the Iranian revolution. From my history class the only thing that I was really taught about the revolution was that it occured during the late 1970's and that the Ayatollah Khomeni was the main leader. I found it especially interesting that the novel was from the perspective of a young girl, even though I couldnt completely relate to her because our experiences in life are so greatly different but I was able to picture myself in her situation sometimes. I feel like this novel defintely sparked my interest in learning more and doing some research on the Iranian Revolution.

I have to agree books like this are essential to cultures like ours, where we are brought up not knowing much about the places similar to Iran. We can learn so much from these and can become motivated to learn even more. I find it extremely important considering what we can learn from the failures and successes they have made.
ReplyDeleteI have always said that in American schools all we do is learn about American history. I can remember from my high school education, we had an entire year of American history but also a year devoted to World History. How can we cover the history of the entire rest of the world in one school year!? I agree that all students should learn more about cultures that we know little about and I think that the graphic novel did just that in a very intriguing and interesting way because even if I had learned of the Iranian Revolution in my high school history classes... chances are I did not retain it like I have with Persepolis.
