Illustration for Comp 4

Like many others in the class I am really excited to get to work on my own graphic memoir, especially after reading Persepolis and Maus. This form worked great in communicating those authors story, and it should work great for mine. I decided to do my memoir about the time I broke my femur and the healing process that followed. Since this experience, I have not really gotten a chance to communicate my story other than through word of mouth so this should be an interesting experience. Yet, with all the excitement comes some anxiety to because I am a terrible artist. My dilemma is how to visually depict my story. I was thinking about pictures, but getting matching ones (especially since I broke my leg in winter and it's now almost summer) seems impossible. So I really am deciding between drawing myself and stick figures. I think I am going to draw so I can express more with peoples bodies and faces but am afraid that people with discredit my work because of the terrible artistic quality. Are any of you guys having problems trying to decide how to draw this thing?

  1. I think that is an awesome topic for your memoir. I also wanted to use some drawing since mine is on a trip that seems not able to be be replicated. But, I don't think I can really make it flow well so I think I may use some other types of sources to depict the story. Maybe you can use x-rays or a prescription or other things that can help to lengthen the illustrations if you don't want to draw the whole thing. I don't think drawing stick figures would discredit you at all, though. I think it could be really cool to see stick figures in a memoir and am excited to see yours.

  2. I think it's a really good topic too and I too am trying to decide whether or not to use pictures or to draw. I think i'll probably end up drawing simply because it would be quite difficult to find pictures to match your story if pictures were never even taken to go along with them. I think drawing is the way to go no matter how terrible of an artist you are. People won't judge your memoir on just the bad art work. The pictures are there to help send the message and if you can relay that message in drawings (even if its bad) than you have succeeded in relating to your audience which is for the most part your overall goal. I for one will be more focused on the content of the picture and not the artistic ability of the author.

  3. I too wonder if stick figures will discredit my work. This is one of the main problems I have been facing. This is a good topic though and i don't believe you will need great detail to represent what happened nor get your message to the audience. I really like the idea of using x-rays in your graphic memoir so even if you do use stick figures this would make the incident stand out and really show what happened.
