Illustrating Composition 4

I was writing a comment on Axels post about illustrating composition four and I thought I'd blog a similar post for everyone to view. He was having concerns about his terrible artistic ability and wasn't sure if it would take away from the memoir as a whole. As I'm sure there aren't many Pacaso's in our class, several of you are probably asking yourself the same thing. The illustrations do play a big part in the memoir and it would be really nice if they were good drawings for everyone to enjoy however, I'm sure that won't be the case. For the purpose of this class, the memoir needs to include pictures to help send your message and relate to the audience and drawing pictures might be better than using actual pictures because you will be able to draw it the way you want your audience to see it. If for example someone was angry, you could very easily draw someone with an angry face and the audience would be able to interpret that as easily as you drew it. The purpose of the memoir is to send a message to your audience, it doesn't matter how terrible the pictures look as long as they get your point across. Don't let your lack of artistic talent hold you back from drawing if that's what you would prefer to do. In the end, your audience will receive the message and the quality of the illustrations won't even phase them when they are interpreting your overall message. What are your thoughts?

  1. I think you are so right witht his comment. My graphic memoir is about my 2 week trip to Europe and all of the funny events/adventures that happened along the way. While I have close to 500 pictures that I took on the trip and several of them will be very helpful, not all of them capture the mood/emotion of the moment and what I am trying to portay to the audience. So that is where illustrations may come in handy. I agree that it is the overall message that is important, not necessarily how pretty your pictures look.

  2. I also completely agree with this post. I have been trying to piece together my pictures to get my point across, but it is not working out so well. My pictures seem to create a choppy story that does not transition very well. At this point, I think I am going to try to draw my comic to get my message to the audience, without making it look like I tried too hard. If I were to use my photos, I would need to stage a bunch of pictures to make it flow, which would probably be more difficult than drawing my own panels.
