xkcd

This a relatively new comic from the online web comic site "xkcd." I feel that it touches on several different topics that McCloud talks about in "Understanding Comics." It does a great job of representing what many kids (including myself) might have done with their friends and free time. The first thing that you might notice is that the whole comic is in one panel, but it actually depicts a few different points in time. We know, of course, that not all of these things are happing all at the exact same instant. It takes time to speak each syllable of each word of each sentence, not to mention the time it takes to do the actions that they are performing. McCloud also talks about how comics are explicitly a one-sense medium, and that is through vision. However, comics have the ability to simulate all of the other senses, and this xkcd comic demonstrates this through the very large and capitalized sounds above each of the actions.

  1. You bring up great points and it really does tie in well to what we've been talking about. I personally read it like someone was yelling the entire time. xkcd is awesome, and I wish we used it more in class!
