Growing Up
After Marjane leaves her home in Iran, she makes a noticeably drastic change in both her appearance and personality. As you may recall, she said over the course of a year, from the ages sixteen to seventeen, she grew seven inches. She took on a 'punk' look with her new hair style, which would have been completely out of the question if she were still living in Iran. After a year or so when Marjane's mother came to visit her, they couldn't even recognize each other. What I found most interesting was when Marjane was telling her mother the story about how she got angry with the nun and told her she that was a prostitute. It almost seemed liked her mother seemed to approve of it. When Marjane did something similar just a short time ago in Iran, her parents were quite upset with her. This kind of struck home with me because I feel like now that I'm in college (I'm still in my first year), my parents couldn't really care less about what I do. Even when I am honest with things that I think that they wouldn't approve of, they kind brush it off now that I'm on my own.
