Satrapi goes to Austria
Satrapi is 14 when she is sent to Austria by her parents. Like I asked in class, did she know she was being lied to that her parents weren't actually coming. She is being sent to a parents good friends house so she may have an idea that her parents are not coming. It struck me in a bad way that parents and grandparents would do this to a daughter/grand-daughter just to protect themselves. It didn't seem that they tried to help her conform to new laws, they simply shipped her off to austria where she would be free from these laws. I feel bad for Satrapi at this point in the story. I forgot about me thinking she was annoying and I felt remorse for her in that she was going to be living without her family at age 14, which i feel is a critical time in your life that you need guidance from your parents. How do you guys feel about this section of Persepolis?

I kind of disagree with one line that you said, that "It struck me in a bad way that parents and grandparents would do this to a daughter/grand-daughter just to protect themselves." I think that they are not trying to protect themselves, but Marjane. They know that if she stays in the country, and with her behavior in school to her teachers and elders, that one day she will say something to the wrong person and then she will be punished or killed.
ReplyDeleteI think in the big picture it was probably a good idea that they did what they did. She needed to be safe, somewhere she could get her education, and away from the dangers of the war. None of which she could have done if she hadn't left, though I think as we see her going down another dangerous path how can we say that she is better off in Austria.
