Comics

When I found out this class was going to be based upon graphic memoir, I was so anxious and excited! We were asked during the very first class what our favorite form of composition is and I failed to mention that I LOVE drawing and art. I took several different art classes throughout my four years in high school. In one of my drawing classes we were asked to create a 3-D comic book cover. We were told to go to the local comic book store and pick a comic book that we wanted to create. I, of course with my very narrow view of comics, chose Looney Tunes (lame, I realize!) But upon creating this comic in 3-D, I did learn a lot more than I previously knew about comics and I am very anxious to learn even more throughout the course of this class. I started this comic book cover by silk screening the sun-set sky background with paint and I built upon that. I did this by first drawing, then filling in with colored pencil and markering each element of the foreground and I finished by adding the shadowbox frame which I think kind of acts as a "gutter." I gained a lot of respect for the intricate illustration of comics as I learned that cartoon drawing is not as easy as one may think. I am eager to learn more about the other elements of comics and their history as well.

  1. That drawing is awesome. I wish I had that kind of artistic talent. And I definately agree with you and am eager to learn more about comics.
