I’m gonna drift away from the topic of Maus a little bit here and talk about some good old Charlie Brown. Now I’ve been a fan of the Peanuts comic strip since I was little and I even bought a calendar for my room this year. However, I never really questioned what the appeal was. After talking about some of the different styles of comics though, I started to look at my calendar a little harder. One reason I think Charles M. Schulz did so well was the fact that he took a very basic approach to drawing his characters. As we discussed in class, the more simple a character the more relatable they are. This allowed the readers to sympathize with poor Charlie Brown when Lucy tortured him with the football or when he was on the pitchers mound. I’m sure every single one of us can find a little Charlie inside (maybe we were picked on when we were little or nothing ever worked out our way) and that is one of the reasons I believe the Peanuts gang will always remain a classic.
Ha ha! i can totally agree with this! i believe that most of the childhood comics and more specifically cartoons are like this. my big one when i was little was Rocko's modern life on Nick. like Maus(although in a far less serious way)the characters were depicted as animals with human attributes. that show was and still is hilarious and easy to relate to because everybody knows someone like Heffer or Rocko!
ReplyDeleteI also completely agree with the fact that everyone can relate to a Peanuts character is one way or another. I also loved Rocko's Modern Life when I was little! My roommate recently came across one of the seasons on dvd. When we were watching it we caught so many things we probably never paid attention to when we were younger, but we could still relate to the show, which I thought was kinda cool.
