Chapter 2 of Volume 2

As we discussed in class on Thursday, I also felt somewhat relieved when Art Spiegelman stopped showing the scenes with him wearing the mask because I had become so accustomed to the characters and seeing them as mice. I knew they were actually people but I was already used to the story and when he started showing himself with a mouse mask on, I had to distance myself from the characters. And I just felt that this was strange because you would think that no one should be used to the story of the holocaust even if he was using animals as characters. It was also hard to see him like that because he was unhappy with himself and how some things had turned out in his life. Adding this to seeing him wear the mask made it seem a little too real even though I know it is a true story, if that makes sense.

  1. Yea it makes sense. I didn't see him wearing a mask as part of the story though. I saw it as kind of a whole different story about his struggle with writing the book and he just wore the mask as a way of relating himself to the characters in his book. It was just a way of setting up the storyline for the new book and letting the audience in on his life after he lost his father. I saw the whole section with him wearing a mask as a story within the story, if that makes sense...

  2. I agree with Sean on this issue. I feel that the mask was a whole other topic within the story. Maybe Art was wearing the mask to simply relate to the audience or to show the hardships of writing his book or even how about this... Art was wearing the mask to show his sorrows he was feeling for his father and what he had gone through in his life and Art wanted to try and relate to his father.
