questions
After finishing Maus I cannot help but come up with so many unanswered questions. One in particular was the relationship between Art and his father. We never learned what impact the death of his father had on Art and his relationship with Vladek. Did Art regret not spending much time with his father? I also found myself wondering if Anja was still alive would Art have asked her to tell the story instead of Vladek. It just seemed to me during both books he didnt want to hear the story from his father. I mean he dedicated the first to his mother and the second to his brother and daughter but what about his father? I wonder too if he would change anything in his book today and if so what and why?

ReplyDeletei totally agree with you. why didn't art want to dedicate either of the books to his father?
i think it's sad that he and his dad could not reconcile their differences just in order to get along, because if the did i bet the book would have gone much smoother and would have been more complete. this leaves yet another question of if art and his dad had a better relationship then how would that have effected the writing and presentation of the book?
I do agree that we were left without any really closure about Art and Vladeks relationship, but I'm not sure that Art purposefully didn't thank his father. Instead, to me the books themselves seem to be a dedication to Vladek, because as you said without him the books wouldn't exist. On the topic of Minman's comment, in my opinion i think if Art and his father had a strong relationship the book would be completely different. I feel that it almost wouldn't be as good but it is hard to postulate such things. One thing is for sure, the death of his father would have be a more emotional experience, in the book it seemed very matter of fact.
