Father and Son

In chapter one of Maus II, I felt that Art's father just wanted some company. He insisted that Art and his wife stay the summer with him. He is a very lonely man seeing as his wife had committed suicide and his recent girlfriend had just left him. It was no question that Art didn't want to stay and it seemed like he cared more about his book than he did his own father. In chapter 2 Art is in the studio getting questioned and he is eventually reduced to a screaming child and his father has long since passed away. It seems now that Art needs his father for more than just his book. He has noone to go to except Pavel. I feel sympathy for Art because I think he feels a sense of guilt and remorse for not being closer with his father. He also states in the book that he feels guilty for not having to go through what his parents went through. Well thats pretty much it for me, so far I think this book is better than the first and am looking forward to finishing it.

  1. When Art showed his negative attitude toward staying with his father I was very upset with him as a person. His father has lead a tough life and just wants some company. I am sure that Art's father had done a lot for him through out his life, so i think it's the least he can do is go give him some company. Yes I feel some sympathy for Art when his father dies but I think he should have taken advantage of the time he had which he didn't do

  2. Yeah I also felt a little bad for Art when he was in the studio, he was getting hammered with questions from the reporters and he didn't know how to write about Auschwitz because he obviously din't experience it.
