Maus Vol II

I found volume two of Maus to be a very interesting and complex graphic novel. I found it interesting that this volume focused a lot more on Art because even though the title implys that it is about Art and his struggles I still expected this novel to deal with Art's relationship with Vladek since it was such an essential part of the first novel. One aspect of the book that I thought was interesting was how much Vladek started to really try and become close with Art, but Art did not really have much interest in becoming closer with his father. It seemed to me throughout both novels that if Vladek ever tried to talk to Art about his life now that Art either changed the subject or just left. Another aspect of the novel that really bugged me was the fact that Art did not thank his father for helping with the book but he thanked everyone else even though without his father there would not be Maus.

  1. It seemed to me that Vladek always liked to have his son around, mainly because he wanted someone to talk to. He didn't really enjoy Mala's company, and didn't want to talk to her more than he needed to. I think Art was a nice change for Vladek because they did not get to see each other that often, and Art was taking extreme interest in Vladek's past. Artie might have been Vladek's best friend because he didn't have many other options of people to interact with.
