Chapter Two

I don’t know what to make of the fact that the beginning of chapter 2 was so different from the rest of the book. To me, it just came out of nowhere. All the characters are wearing masks. After seeing this, I had to change my idea of what exactly the masks represent. Or maybe not. The frames were really different. All through Maus, the panels are drawn to show how Vladek’s history bleeds into Art’s life. But these panels are really different. Art is drawing on top of dead bodies. It was striking. Another thing that I noticed was that Art is interacting a lot more with his audience. At one point he asks, “Can I mention this, or does it completely louse up my metaphor?” It felt like he was having a conversation with me. It was neat that even this amazing comic artist is unsure of himself. Even after all the critics were telling him that Maus is amazing, he is still concerned with telling the history of his father’s struggles correctly. It’s funny that Art is still trying to please his father even after death and after choosing art so he didn’t have to compete with his dad. What do you guys think?

  1. This entire page is depressing. the flies are everywhere and the dead mice take up half the frame. I wonder if he did this style to emphasize his emotions that he's been feeling since he published the first volume. He even mentions "lately I've been feeling depressed." Also, if you look in the first frame, he has stubble on his chin, which is kind of in line with the typical portrayal of depressed and busy men.
